Director General, SSS-NIBE

Greetings!

Welcome to Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. Established in 2009, the Institute continues to uphold the Ministry’s mandates of strengthening new research and development, promoting technological innovation, and advancing clean energy solutions that support India’s transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon future. From a modest beginning with a limited scientific workforce, SSS-NIBE has made commendable contributions through quality research publications, technology development efforts, training programmes, and capacity-building initiatives. Strengthened by enhanced research capabilities and a clearly defined strategic direction, the Institute is firmly positioned to deliver transformative bioenergy solutions and grow into a premier institution shaping global innovation in sustainable energy.

Aligned with MNRE’s broader vision, we aim to deepen R&D on advanced biofuels, biomass valorization, waste-to-energy conversion, and next-generation bioenergy technologies. Our priorities includes fostering industry collaborations, enabling technology transfer, enhancing pilot-scale demonstrations, and building a skilled workforce capable of driving India’s green energy mission. We remain committed to ensuring that our research not only advances scientific understanding but also leads to solutions that are viable, scalable, and beneficial to society. In the years ahead, our collective effort will strengthen core research domains, enable indigenous technology development, and contribute meaningfully to India’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. The Institute will accelerate “lab-to-land” deployment through innovation-driven pilot-scale demonstrations, standardization, and commercialization.

Together, with the experience of our senior scientists and the energy of young researchers, SSS-NIBE is committed for transformative innovation, growth, and leadership in the field of bioenergy.
Thank you.

Secretary MNRE, Government of India

Bioenergy is a crucial pillar in India's transition to a sustainable and self-reliant energy future. It is crucial to unlock the full potential of this sector, not only to diversify our energy mix, but also to ensure enhanced energy access, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

In this regard, Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) has been at the forefront of this transformation, driving cutting-edge research, technological innovations, and capacity building in bioenergy. Through its efforts, SSS NIBE is playing a key role in the development of modern bioenergy technologies, advanced biofuels and sustainable value-added products, all of which are vital to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change.

As we continue to pursue the ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, bioenergy will remain an integral part of India's strategy. SSS NIBE's work will not only help in achieving our energy targets but also support greener livelihoods generation, rural economy, and cleaner environment for future generations. I commend the institute for its contributions to the bioenergy sector and for its unwavering commitment to advancing India's renewable energy mission.
